Synopsis:
Inspired by personal experiences, through this performance the artists analyze what underlies and connects each human relationship. At the same time, they question the limits between care and obsession, love and pain, support and control.
The name of the piece, “AMAE”, comes from an exclusively Japanese behavior described by the psychoanalyst Takeo Doi, who explains it as a need to be well and to be able to depend on the people around us. Amae (甘え) is a Japanese word that is used to describe the behavior of people when they want to be loved, to be cared for, when they consciously or unconsciously want to be dependent on another person with a certain meaning of submission. From a certain perspective, amae can be a very warm and human behavior, such as the desire to be in harmony with others and to be able to trust them as a child can trust its parents. From another point of view, it might seem like it encourages self-indulgence, dependency, and control. It is this duality that interests Eliana Stragapede and Borna Babić.
Biography:
Eliana Stragapede (1996, Italy) studied and graduated at Codarts, Rotterdam. During her training she worked with Marina Mascarell and Club Guy & Roni’s PDC. In 2018 she joined the Staatstheater Mainz where she performed pieces by Roy Assaf, Club Guy & Roni, Victor Quijada, Felix Berner and Pierre Rigal. In 2020 she became part of the Peeping Tom dance theater company, with the production “Triptic”. She is currently also participating in the new production “Fortune”, a collaboration between Club Guy & Roni and Navdhara India Dance Theatre.
As a young creator, she has created “AMAE” (2022) together with Borna Babić. The piece has won first prize at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition and the Best Production award from the Nederlands Dans Theater and Holstebro Dansekompagni.
Borna Babić (1994, Croatia) is a Brussels-based freelance performer, choreographer and teacher. After his studies at Codarts, Rotterdam (2018) he worked as a professional dancer with Marina Mascarell and Club Guy & Roni’s PDC. He currently works with Olivier de Sagazan as an interpreter at “La Messe de la Âne” and has been part of Ultima vez / Wim Vandekeybus since 2019, performing in “Die Bakchen”, “Thracians”, “Hands do not touch your precious Me” and “ Scattered Memories”.
As a choreographer, he was commissioned to choreograph the dance film “The end does not see” (2021) for the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. The same year he created her first complete work “Okvir” / “The frame” for the Zagreb Dance Company. His independent work “AMAE” (2022), created together with Eliana Stragapede, has won first prize at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition and the Best Production award from the Nederlands Dans Theater and Holstebro Dansekompagni.
Fueling her passion for teaching, he conducts various workshops throughout Europe on contemporary dance, partnering and improvisation, as well as the Ultima vez repertoire. In 2022 he was certified as a Counter technique teacher.
